Choosing the Right Bed, Mattress and Accessories

As central as sleep is to the maintenance of a healthy life, the decision about how to configure your sleeping space is of paramount importance. Despite this, it is still a decision that many only dedicate passing consideration to. Not so at Vencasa.

For us, there is nothing more important than deciding on the set-up of one’s sleeping environment. After all, sleeping well means living well.

There are many factors to take into account when deciding on the products to which you wish to entrust your nightly rejuvenation.

PRIORITISE APPROPRIATELY

Not all bedding products were created equally. The order of priority in designing your sleeping environment, from most important to least, should look like this:

THE BED
(includes the mattress, adjustable base, frame and headboard)

The centrepiece of your bedroom and of your sleeping lifestyle, your bed should command the majority of your bedroom budget.

Some factors to take into account when choosing the mattress, headboard and base that will make up your bed are:
  • The position you sleep in: Take the time to get a sleep position assessment. The position in which you sleep will determine the mattress best suited to supporting your spine’s natural contours while you sleep.
  • Your height: The length of your body dictates the length of the bed you will need. Your sleeping position should not be constrained by the size of your bed.
  • Sleep problems: Some common sleep-related problems, such as snoring, sleep apnea and neck-pain, can be alleviated by sleeping on the right mattress or pillow.
  • Pregnancy: The second and third trimesters of pregnancy can necessitate additional support in order to minimise discomfort.

PILLOWS

A pillow should be more than just a soft place to lay your head.

As an integral and fundamental piece of the sleeping solution, your choice of pillow should be made holistically, taking into account such factors as:
  • Shoulder breadth: Especially true if you sleep on your side. Broader shoulders require a larger pillow to keep the head and neck level while you sleep.
  • Allergies: Should your pillow be down or a hypoallergenic synthetic material?
  • Back and neck pain: Reduce muscular tension by choosing a pillow that adapts to the contours of your spine and supports you while you sleep.
  • The position you sleep in: Like with the selection of a mattress, your choice of pillow must take into account the position you sleep in. Do you sleep on your side, your back or your stomach? There are pillows designed and specially shaped to support the backs, heads, necks and shoulders of sleepers of all kinds.

BED LINENS

There’s nothing quite like slipping into a well-made bed, wrapped in crisp, clean, cotton sheets to make you feel as pampered as you deserve after a hard day’s work.

There is, however, more to the decision of what linens to purchase than you might think.
  • Thread Count: Thread count refers to the number of crossed threads per square inch of fabric. A higher count means finer threads and softer sheets. Good sheets typically have a thread count of between 200 and 800, sometimes even as high as 1000.
  • Fabric: Sheets made from natural materials are more breathable than synthetics, with cotton and cotton blends being the favourite for sheets. Egyptian cotton is reputed to be the best material for weaving sheets.
  • Temperature: Keep cool in summer and cover yourself in cotton sheets with a moderate thread count. Higher thread counts are thicker and less breathable, and when woven from silk or sateen they trap more heat against your body – the perfect winter wrapping. Selecting a temperature-sensitive duvet means it can be used for all seasons.

LIGHTING

Your bedroom is your sanctuary, your safe place away from the burdens and the stresses of the outside world. Integral to creating the perfect atmosphere of relaxation are the lighting choices you make.

These choices must meet the demands of your lifestyle, and several factors should be taken into consideration:
  • Room size: Your lighting choice should illuminate as much of the room as is necessary.
  • Style choice: The lighting of the room should complement and enhance the theme and ambience you are attempting to achieve.
  • Ambience vs task-specific: Ambient lighting sets the tone of the room and soft, warm lighting is often the preferred choice to create an atmosphere of relaxation. Task-specific lighting offers focused illumination on specific areas where tasks are expected to take place, such as reading in bed.
